PRESIDENT'S COMMENTS

Dear Discovery Friends,

As I sit down to write this, we are preparing to head out for Albuquerque to attend the Balloon Fiesta Discovery Rally hosted by Ken and Jackie Adams.  We are sure going to miss Ken & Jackie as members of DI since they have chosen to order that "costly spread" American Tradition.  What some people do to get a bedroom slide - we wish them well and they will be missed.
Reflecting back on the action-packed month of August, we had a grand time at the fantastic rally held in Fryeburg, Maine, hosted by Ron and Sarah Hyslop.  We really owe them a big "thank you" for all their hard work and excellent planning.  Following this rally, we caravanned down to Brunswick for the record breaking (7,400 coaches) Summer International Convention.  While our parking spots had some undesirable features (tall grass & old tarmac) it provided all the free black berries you wanted to pick.
Following Brunswick, we headed down to Portland, Maine to attend a two-week FMCA Habitat for Humanity Chapter build.  Spending two weeks hanging drywall in three houses is tiring work.  As my cardiologist stated during my recent checkup, "if you survived that without any chest pain, you sure don't need any stress test."
By now most of you have received your recall from Fleetwood to have your rig checked to have the power steering hoses rerouted.  If you have not received the recall, you may want to give Fleetwood a call.
At the present time we have all the spots filled for the 2001 DI Alaska Tour, but we would be glad to put your name on the wait list if you are interested in making this trip-of-a-lifetime in June and July 2001.  We will be returning in time to attend the Summer Convention to be held in Redmond, Oregon, and the DI pre-rally to be held at a site which Russell & Roxie Foster are securing for the group.  Stay tuned for further developments.
John & Mary Boka are working on the details for our Branson Pre-Rally to be held in late March 2001, prior to attending the Winter International Convention in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, April 3-5, 2001. Don't forget Renfro Valley in October, 2001.  The November/December newsletter should have full details, but make sure you are saving these dates so you can attend.  Everyone who attends these pre-rallies will tell you how much fun they have attending the smaller group rallies before going into an International Convention with the thousands of people.
I need to get this column finished so we can head off to Columbus, Indiana, to meet the Hysolps and Chinns and tour the Cummins ISB plant and have dinner together before heading out west and eventually to Florida for the winter.
By the way, do you know anyone who would like to purchase a very-little-used (5 weeks this year) lake home in North Webster, IN?  Oh, well, it will be a good place to spend time in our "older age" remembering all those fun times we had motor homing with out "D".

Happy Discovery'ing,

Jim Campbell

STARTER RELAY PROBLEMS?

Many of us receive value from the information shared at round-table discussions at Discovery rallies.

For about the past year I had been noticing a high pitched while when I first started the "D" in the morning.  One of our members shared his experience with this problem and discovered it was the starter relay causing the starter to stay engaged after the motor is running.  The way to test for this problem is to turn off the key as soon as the engine has fired up and see if your starter is still running.
Luckily, we were able to get our coach into Cummins at S. Portland and have the relay replaced before it completely failed.

AT THE SITE PHONE HOOK UP

With access to the internet becoming so important, it is wonderful to find RV resorts and campgrounds that are on the cutting edge.

One such park is situated in north Georgia on the North Carolina border.  River Vista Mountain Village in Dillard, Georgia, is brand new and only a few minutes from a National Forest and the Wal-Mart!  So, if viewing the fall foliage is on your list of things to do, keep this park in mind.

FRYEBURG RALLY

By all accounts, the pre-rally was a significant success.  Sarah and I want to thank all that volunteered and attended which made the rally so great.  The Welcome party desserts, pancake breakfast, wine & cheese party, and pot luck dinner were the result of such wonderful volunteers.  Our parking crew and registration people did a super job with a final total of 58 coaches.

We want to recognize our sponsors, Fleetwood RV for the Mystery Dinner, Campers Inn of Kingston, New Hampshire, for all the breakfasts and ANCIRCA Motor Homes for the 2001 Discovery display.
Door prizes were donated by the following and greatly appreciated:  FMCA, Fleetwood RV, Jackets & Watches; Delorme, Mapping Software; Janet & Griff Livingston, First Aid Kits; Mr. Ed Badges, Travel Maps; RV Alliance, Fire Extinguishers; Betty & Wendell Snydal of Camping World, Goodie Bags & Gift Certificates; and Vintage Flowers of Osterville, Candles.  Journeylink.com donated our grand door prize of a Digital Camera.
Kenneth Rancourt, Senior Research Manager, Mount Washington Observatory, gave an excellent talk and showed some very interesting slides of the top of the mountain that most never see.
The seminar presenters did a great job and we thank them, Janet & Griff Livingston for the Fire  Safety and Jim & Lois Campbell for Computer Mapping & GPS.  Cummins and Fleetwood Service are also recognized for their representation at Fryeburg.  The follow-up service by Fleetwood technicians was greatly appreciated.
The caterers for our Mystery Dinner were P & P Concessions (our son and daughter-in-law), and The White Birches Country Club for the lobster/steak dinners which were superb.  The great bakery products came from the Stow Corner Store. Bob Scull generously donated the coffee machine and his time to prepare the coffee.  Janet and Griff Livingston provided the tent.
We would be remiss if we did not recognize the people from Fryeburg Fair, Glen Chute and his crew, who provided excellent facilities and great cooperation in support of our rally.
We enjoyed being Rally Masters for this rally and would encourage others to host or co-host a rally, it really is a lot of fun.

Sarah & Ron Hyslop

DISCOVERY INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL MEETING

The following is a brief synopsis of the secretary's report of Discovery International's Annual Meeting, held at the FMCA Summer Convention in Brunswick, Maine.

There were 41 voting units and 5 guest couples present.  A motion was made and passed to direct the membership chairman to prepare a membership list to be distributed annually to all members.  This membership list is not to be used for business or personal gain.  It is IMPORTANT to note that any member not wishing to have his/her name included on the list that will be compiled and distributed should notify our membership chairperson, Bill Scheerer of his/her wish not to be included.
Virginia Wampler, Chairperson of the Nominating Committee and members Ken Adams and Alice Bohn presented the committee's nominees for election.  Elected were Vice President, Bob Chinn; National Director, Ron Hyslop; Alternate National Director, Griff Livingston.
Lois Campbell, By-Laws Committee member, gave a report of FMCA-recommended changes to our by-laws.  The recommended changes were accepted by our members.

Dick Bohn, Secretary

FIRE SAFETY SEMINAR AT FRYEBURG

One of the seminars offered at Fryeburg was a fire safety seminar conducted by Griff and Janet Livingston.  Griff is a retired fire chief with 36 years experience and Janet is a retired paramedic.  The seminar covered carbon monoxide poisoning, the most common causes of fires in motor homes and use and care of fire extinguishers.  During the classroom part of the seminar, many excellent tips and experiences were shared by the seminar givers as well as the attendees.  The informal seminar was followed by live fire fighting using extinguishers.  Over 20 brave Discovery International members repeatedly used fire using extinguishers to put out the fires set by fire bug Harry Condrey.  With the wind, it got a little messy, but that didn't stop anyone, including many first time users, from grabbing the extinguisher to put out the fire.

Fire prevention and extinguishing was followed by CO testing done in a "D", with the generator running and upstack attached.  Both the demonstration "D" and the one next to it were tested with a CO monitor.

CHUCK AND DONNA TOLSON, WEBMASTERS

Discovery International is very fortunate that the Tolsons have agreed to use their computer expertise to maintain a web site for Discovery International. Chuck works as a network administrator for Johnson Controls, Inc. in Alexandria, Virginia, and Donna manages a group of software testers and trainers at the Joint Warfare Analysis Center in Dahlgren, Virginia.  Chuck is a born and raised Stafford Virginian and Donna was born and raised in Kittery Point, Maine, and had previously worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  She moved to Virginia back in 1970.  They have worked their way from a 18ft Komfort Light travel trailer to a 24-ft Diesel C-class Coachmen, to a Thor Pinnacle, and finally to a Discovery, B & B model, in 1998.

Donna is active in the Fredericksburg PC User's Group and teaches a monthly Genealogy class.  She also substitute teaches some of the Microsoft classes.  She is currently taking a FrontPage course so she can manage the DI's web page, where she is planning on adding a membership list in the near future.  They are also thinking about adding pages to the site like the Newsletter and previous newsletters, previous rallies and upcoming rallies, etc.  Donna and Chuck are open to any of your ideas for other additions to the web site. Email them with your ideas cdtolson@usa.net

Chuck is what Donna refers to as "Mr. Gadget Man" as he is always adding some new fangled electronic or computer "thing" to the the D or in the house.  They presently have 4 satellite dishes and Donna thinks there is a 5th one on the horizon - DirectPC.
They have 9 grandchildren (from 2 to 13) all living in Virginia near them.
Fryeburg was their first Discovery International rally and Brunswick their first FMCA convention.  They had a wonderful time, especially getting to make some new friends.
They own a lot at Crystal Lake in Naples, Florida, where several other Discovery owners winter, and are looking forward to spending winters there, too.  They will be retiring in a few years and are looking forward to joining a lot of you out there on the road more often.

QUICK AND EASY ICE CREAM

  • 14 oz. can fat-free, sweetened condensed milk

  • 3/4 cup low-fat (1%) milk

  • 1 Tbls. vanilla extract

  • 2 cups heavy or whipping cream

In a large bowl with a wire whisk, mix condensed milk, low-fat milk and vanilla until blended.  In another large bowl with mixer at medium speed, beat cream until stiff peaks form.  With rubber spatula, fold whipped cream into milk mixture until blended.  Spoon mixture into a metal bowl and cover.  Place in refrigerator freezer.  Remove after two hours and fold frozen edges to the center.  Return to the freezer for five hours, or overnight.  Enjoy!

PUZZLED?

In a certain bank, the positions of cashier, manager, and teller are held by Brown, Jones and Smith, though not necessarily respectively.  The teller, who was an only child, earns the least.  Smith, who married Brown's sister, earns more than the manager.  What position does each person fill?

GOVERNING BOARD REPORT

On August 17th, in Brunswick, I attended the Governing Board meeting as the representative from Discovery International.  84% of the National Directors were present.  I will comment on only the highlights of the meeting, which covered nine hours of reports and discussions.

The year 2001 compromise budget was passed totaling $15,103,400.00.  There were no by-laws changes as the current by-laws are under review.  The vote to eliminate the "window" for summer conventions did pass after much discussion.  The vote was 175 for/153 against.  This will allow the Convention & Rally Committee to consider dates outside of the July-August time frame for summer conventions to avoid potential extreme heat (Ames) and other site availability.  The Long Range Planning Committee work is continuing and the next major area of study is governance of FMCA.
The election of National Officers resulted in:  Charlie Atkinson, President; Jeff Jeffcoat, S. Vice President; June Davis, Secretary; R. G. Wilson, Treasurer.
Other items were approved:  to increase the reimbursement allowance for national officers travel to 2X the IRS rate allowed for automobiles; to sponsor a coach weighing program by Aweigh We Go, with FMCA subsidizing the cost by $10/coach.
The dates for the next International Conventions are: 2001 - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, April 3, 4, 5; Redmond, Oregon, August 14, 15, 16.  2002 - Perry, Georgia, dates pending; Hutchinson, Kansas, September.
If anyone has questions on details of the meeting, please contact me at 508 385 7328 or saron@prodigy.net .

Ron Hyslop, National Director

THINGS YOUR MOTHER PROBABLY TOLD YOU

BUT YOU WERE NOT LISTENING

  • If your sponge or dish rag gets a little stinky and germy - pop it in the microwave for 20 seconds.  You get a clean, fresh sterile sponge!

  • Stuff a miniature marshmallow in the bottom of a sugar cone to prevent ice cream drips.

  • Use a meat baster to squeeze your pancake batter onto the hot griddle to get perfectly shaped pancakes every time.

  • To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.

  • To prevent eggshells from cracking, add a pinch of salt to the water before hard-boiling.

  • Run your hands under cold water before pressing Rice Krispies treats in the pan and the marshmallow won't stick to your fingers.

  • To get the most juice out of fresh lemons, bring them to room temperature and roll them under your palm against the kitchen counter before squeezing.

  • To easily remove burnt on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, bring to a boil on stovetop.

  • Spray your Tupperware with nonstick cooking spray before pouring a tomato-based sauce and there won't be any stains.

  • When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking pan, use a bit of the dry cake mix instead and there won't be any white mess on the outside of the cake.
